Final Lords Debate for Renters Rights Bill Set Before Summer Recess

The Renters Rights Bill will have its Third Reading in the House of Lords on July 21, just days before the summer recess begins. This final stage allows the Lords to review the Bill and make any last clarifications before it returns to the Commons.
Unlike in the Commons, amendments may still be proposed during this stage in the Lords. These tend to focus on refining the language and ensuring the Bill will work as intended in practice.
Because there are differences between the Lords and Commons versions, the Bill is likely to go through the process known as ‘Ping Pong’, where both houses review and amend until a final version is agreed.
With Labour’s strong majority and widespread support across the Commons, this process may proceed without difficulty. While Royal Assent could theoretically be achieved before the summer break, it is more likely that final consideration will happen when the Commons returns on September 1, ahead of Labour’s annual conference.
